Video 3: How to Set More Effective Goals for Your ELLs

We need to tie our big broad goals down to something we can reasonably accomplish in a single class.

If we take a vague, broad goal of learning the present simple tense and make it something concrete like the following…

  • “My students each need to be able to say 3 positive present simple tense sentences without mistakes.”

Then our vague, broad goal becomes…

  • clear
  • concrete &
  • manageable

This is a goal that students can accomplish in a single day. This is a goal that is going to help me focus my activities. I'm not going to get bogged down in negatives and questions yet; I'm only going to focus on positive sentences for now. I'm not going to get bogged down in writing anything yet; I'm going to focus on just speaking for now.
